Romans 3:19 - 22
Romans 3:19
"Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God."
This verse is directed to the Pharisees, who, in their unrighteous and self-righteous attitudes felt that the whole world (with the exception of the Jew) would come into condemnation and judgment. Paul states
that those who are under the Law (within the sphere of the Law) will be judged by that standard. The reason: So that "all the world may become guilty before God". "May become guilty" literally means "To come under Judgment or condemnation". Paul, through the power of the Spirit, informs the Jews in no uncertain terms that they will be judged by their law, being damned or cursed by the same.
Romans 3:20
"Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge [epignosis] of sin."
The Greek word used here for "knowledge" is "EPIGNOSIS". Paul uses this particular word 15 time in his epistles. The meaning is "a clear and exact knowledge".
In this verse we see the final point Paul makes toward the Jew and the Laws by bringing out the original intent and purpose of the Law. When God gave the Law to the Old Testament Patriarchs He "never" meant for that law to be used as a means to justify or make righteous any man. The sacramental Laws held back the hands of judgment, being a type or foreshadowing of Christ. The Legal Laws, especially the Ten Commandments, established a rule of order within the tribes of Israel. None of these Laws were meant to make any person righteous. "The patriarchs understood that justification comes by Faith alone."
The final intent of the Law, as reflected in over 600 perceptual codes with over 2000 specific applications was to show foolish man that there was no way that he could justify himself outside of God's
Grace. The Law was given to open our foolish eyes to our own inadequacies:
Galatians 3:21-25 "Is the law then against the promises of God? God forbid: for if there had been a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law. But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe. But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed. Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster."
God gave the Law to man for about 5000 years, and then disabled it at the Cross of Christ. Yet foolish men still seek justification by the Law today. I call your attention, in particular, "to the "legalists" and "holiness" branches in Christianity today that proclaim there are certain things you must do (or not do) to retain your salvation. How foolish!" That which was began in Christ and by His power will not be completed by our feeble attempts to follow a dead Law. As the Scripture says:
Philippians 1:6 "Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:"
We who are Christians should compare what the Jews had to do under the Law and rejoice in the fact that we are now free in Christ. Why would you allow another man to rob you of your freedom to serve God by bewitching standards of conduct that God Himself never placed on His Church?
Galatians 3:1-3 "O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you? This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?"
"Think about that:" If you were begun (born again) by the Spirit of God, how can you expect to be completed (reach Christian maturity) by the dead Law? What God started spiritually He will finish spiritually, what God made right by Grace He will complete by Grace.
Romans 3:21-22
"[21] But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested [phaeroo], being witnessed by the law and the prophets; [22] Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ (or "faith In Jesus Christ") unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:"
"is manifested" is the Greek "PHAEROO", which means "make visible, to reveal, to remain open to view". The righteousness of God is revealed to all men without the ineffective means of the Law, revealed through justification by faith in Jesus Christ alone. Both the Law and the Prophets all foretold of this justification by faith
through Jesus.

Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have. And when he had thus spoken, he shewed them his hands and his feet. And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, Have ye here any meat? And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish, and of an honeycomb. And he took it, and did eat before them. And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me. Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures, And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behooved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. And ye are witnesses of these things."
( Jesus resurrected from the dead ) |
Of the thirty-eight prophecies concerning the Messiah, "all" came true in Jesus Christ. The chances of "just eight" of these prophecies coming true in one person, as these prophecies could not be deliberately fulfilled, is:
1 in 100,000,000,000,000,000
"The places and manner of birth, betrayal and manner of death, and people's reactions were outside of the realm of human control. Jesus was the Messiah, and the proof of His Messianic Office is confirmed through the human impossibility of fulfilling these prophecies. The righteousness of God without the Law was indeed manifested through Jesus Christ. Through God's fulfillment of prophecy in Christ we know that we are eternally secure, if we believe in Him as Savior."
Continuing in Romans 3:22, we next read: "the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe". The word "righteousness" here means that state which is in perpetual justification, that state of being "right or innocent". Through faith in Christ the believer cloaks himself in the very righteousness of God as a spiritual
absolute.
Philippians 3:8-9 "Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:"
All who want eternal life in Heaven must put on the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ. When we put on this righteousness we are freed from the curse of the Law, for we are then under the standard of Christ. Once under the blood of Christ we cannot be condemned:
John 3:18 "He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God."
John 5:24 "Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life."
Romans 8:1 "There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit."
The believer in Christ comes out of the realm of condemnation into the realm of God's righteousness. "Are you saved? If not, and if you're trying to work your way into Heaven by following the Law or some code of morality, then you're deceiving yourself."
" Think about it! "
