Sinking on March 10, 1943 the
" S.S. James Sprunt "
lost " 69 " crewmen ...
" The Entire Crew ! "

The steam tanker " S.S. James Sprunt " was built in 1943 by the " North Carolina Shipbuilding Company ", Wilmington, North Carolina for the Black Diamond SS Company, New York, City, New York.   The ship was named after " James Sprunt ".

On March 10, 1943 the " S.S. James Sprunt " ( which was on it's maiden voyage ) was part of convoy " KG-123 " which was enroute from Charleston, South Carolina to Karachi, India with a cargo of 4000 tons of explosives .

They were hit by a torpedo fired by " German Submarine U-185 " southeast of Guantanamo Bay.   That one torpedo caused her cargo to explode and the ship completely disappeared in 30 seconds with it's entire crew of " 69 " which included " 8 " officers, " 36 " crewmen and " 25 " U.S. Navy armed guards !
