Sinking on March 28, 1945 the Oklahoma loss " 50 " of her crew !

The " S.S. Oklahoma " was built in 1940 by the Sun Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Company, Chester, Pennsylvania.   The Oklahoma weighed 9,298 tons and was owned by the The Texas Company, Wilmington, Delaware.   She was attacked " twice " during World War II.

The " S.S. Oklahoma " was first attacked in very shallow waters by German Submarine U-123 about 10 miles off St. Simon's Island, Georgia on April 8, 1942 with a loss of 19 of her crew.    " She was towed back to Chester, Pennsylvania and restored to service ".

Second Attack

The unescorted " S.S. Oklahoma " with a crew of 72, which was sailing between South America and Africa in the Mid-Atlantic, was hit by one torpedo from German Submarine U-532 while steaming on a non-evasive course at 14.5 knots.   The torpedo struck on the starboard side between the #6 and #7 tanks aft of the pump room, igniting the cargo and the tanker exploded.
