The steam tanker " S.S. Steel Navigator " was built in 1923 by the " Federal Shipbuilding and Drydock Company " Kearny, New Jersey for the Isthmian SS Company, New York City, New York.

         On October 19, 1942 the " S.S. Steel Navigator " was a straggler of convoy " ON-137 " and was enroute from London, England to New York City, New York with a cargo of 2000 tons of sand ballast and a crew of " 8 " officers, " 28 " crewmen and " 16 " Navy armed guards.

         They were hit by a torpedo fired by " German Submarine U-610 " in the North Atlantic.   The torpedo struck the ship between the #1 and #2 hatches, causing the vessel to settle rapidly by the head and to sink in three minutes after the boilers exploded.
