WW II

Wednesday,
" September 13, 2023 "

( Originally created in February, 2015 )

Sinking on October 19, 1942 the

" S.S. Steel Navigator "

lost " 36 " men !

The steam tanker " S.S. Steel Navigator " was built in 1923 by the Federal Shipbuilding and Drydock Company Kearny, New Jersey
for the Isthmian SS Company, New York City, New York.

On October 19, 1942 the " S.S. Steel Navigator " was a straggler of convoy " ON-137 " and was enroute from London, England to New York City, New York with a cargo of 2000 tons of sand ballast and a crew of " 8 " officers, " 28 " crewmen and " 16 " Navy armed guards.

They were hit by a torpedo fired by " German Submarine U-610 " in the North Atlantic.   The torpedo struck the ship between the #1 and #2 hatches, causing the vessel to settle rapidly by the head and to sink in three minutes after the boilers exploded.

" 26 "
Merchant Mariners and
" 10 "
Navy Armed Guards perished !

The ship Master / Captain of the S.S. Steel Navigator was:

Of Towson, Maryland who was lost in this sinking !

One survivor of this sinking was

Donald Gilbert Allen

who served as the Second Mate and later joined the U.S. Navy

and was lost on the " U.S.S. Liscome Bay " (CVE 56) on November 24, 1943 !

The following below list was created in the memory of those who
" Gave Their All " on the " S.S. Steel Navigator " !

There are personal " Online Memorials " for each of these honored men that were created for them by using the " Find A Grave Website ".   On the " Majority " of the online memorials you will see a small biography for each soldier which may include:

Parent's, Grandparent's & Sibling's Names,
where & when they were born,
where they grew up,
when & where they enlisted in the service,
the military unit they were part of,
